SOLUTIONS

3.1

C The header and footer in fig. i allow you to work out which of the districts you are interested in. The header begins with a ‘D’, which is the fourth letter in the alphabet. Below this, we have +15+1-2 - jumping ahead 15 spots in the alphabet lands us at ’S’, jumping one beyond that lands us at ’T’ and jumping back two spots lands us at ‘R’. The footer begins with this sequence of letters ‘DSTR’ and more calculations to make from this point. Once figured out, you will have:

DSTR:HNJVBROQ

3.2

The correct solution is shown below, along with the relevant X and Y totals.

3.3

In order to complete this challenge, each team must share their mapping information with the other. Effectively giving the information shown on the completed map below. Use the co-ordinates given as X and Y totals in fig. ii to plot the location of the central hub. From here, follow the conditions stated in the text to plot the three remaining locations. Then use the table in fig. iv to decipher the word:

“CONVERGE”

Final Code

By combining both teams’ Log pages as though they were a double page spread, with the ‘border’ in the centre, as shown below, it is possible to decipher a final challenge:

“MARK DOWN THE POINT THE FOUR SPOTS ALREADY FOUND MUTUALLY CONVERGE”

In other words, make an ‘X’ between the four points already marked on your map to get a final co-oridnate and, in turn, your three-digit code.
